What you do
As an Agricultural Extension Agent, you are an intermediary between research and farmers. You operate as a facilitator and communicator, helping farmers in their decision-making and ensuring that appropriate knowledge is implemented to obtain the best results with regard to sustainable production and general rural development.
The tough stuff
You might face the following challenges as an Agricultural Extension Agent:
- Water shortage and limited water resources
- Lack of experienced technical personnel
- Soil and water salinity
- Rising cost of desalination
- Marketing problems
- Low prices for products
- Pests and diseases
The cool stuff
As an Agricultural Extension Agent, you get to:
- Provide rural people with the access to knowledge and information they need to increase productivity and sustainability of their production systems and improve their quality of life and livelihoods.
- Ensure that the clientele (farmers) have access to improved the technologies, such as improve the level of qualifications of farmers and rural inhabitants, and assistance in the creation of production groups.
- Help farmers practice sustainable agriculture to realize reasonable production on their farms and at the same time are advocate for the adoption of conservation measures to protect the Kingdom’s natural resources.
Typical work hours
- May work part time or full time
- May travel out of the local area when advising farmers
- May occasionally work irregular hours during community events
